Preventing Identity Theft
Statistics show that it may take 14 months for a person to discover that
their identity has been stolen. To guard against this type of fraud, order
a copy of your credit report once a year from TransUnion,
Experian and Equifax credit bureaus.
On December 1, 2004, a new federal law went into
effect requiring credit bureaus to provide you with a free copy of your
report once a year. (You may also obtain a free report if you have recently
been denied credit.)
You can obtain your free report by visiting the Web
site AnnualCreditReport.com, by calling 877-322-8228, or by sending a
written request to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P. O. Box 105281,
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
Some other tips to guard against identity theft:
Guard your Social Security
number and other personal
information. Never give your information to anyone
unless they
have a very good reason for needing it.
Don’t carry unneeded
credit cards or your Social Security
card with you.
Shred or destroy any papers
you throw out, especially those
with sensitive or identifying information such as
ATM, credit card,
debit card and other receipts.
Keep a master list of your
credit card account numbers and your
card providers' telephone numbers in a safe place so
you can
cancel them quickly in case they are lost or
stolen.
